Story Analysis of From The Ashes 2024:
Amira is a student of a school in Saudi Arabia. She has been selected as the student of the month. But it seems other students aren’t happy about it. They even call her nerd. Then the teacher comes for the morning inspection. She pulls some rule violating girls out of the line and sends them to the principal’s.
Principal has an important appointment at the court so she leaves telling them to write their complaints. Sahem mam suggests to her to make her father complaints against them. Then they will be expelled. But Amira doesn’t want them to be expelled, she just wants them to leave her alone. Poor girl Amira, all girls are bullying her just because she is doing excellent.
All the girls go to the store room obeying the order of Physical Trainer miss. The bully gang is not happy about it and they ‘bullying’, ‘counter bullying’ are continuing between Amira and the bully gang. Mashael has a boyfriend and she is gonna call from her mom’s phone. She doesn’t want anyone to notice it. Marzuka is the cleaner of the school who supplies handsome boys’ phone numbers to girls in exchange she takes money.
Amira’s father has been discharged from hospital so she is hurrying to go home. Principal is fighting a case against Rana’s father who is trying to get custody of his daughter. She isn’t gonna let him win and she lets Rana know that her grades might be ‘very good’ but that’s not enough. She wants excellence.
Amira brings her father chestnuts when father Saeed is painting a beautiful picture. He is very happy when he sees how much his little girl has grown up. The best thing is Amira wants to be the best chef in the world. Father Saeed also congratulates her for the excellent result. Saeed is painting a landscape which is supposed to be given to her friend Rana.
The Fire and Amira’s Death; From The Ashes 2024:
Next day, Amira gets to school early and she needs to be in the storeroom for a mathematics book as she lost it. But someone locks the room even though she screams to wait for her. Amira falls off the chair and faints. Suddenly out of nowhere, fire ignites at a corner and within a few moments it spreads out everywhere in the school.
Students who get to go down but can’t be able to go out as the doorman isn’t present. Miss Sahem calls the authority to give them permission. Miss Afaf gets the girls to go upstairs but she can’t survive the fire. Amira screams at the top of her lungs to get help but no one listens.
The police are investigating the fire incident, interrogating everyone individually. Everyone speaks out what they have to say but the police can’t find out who locked the door. When I was watching the movie, I was so angry at Miss Hayat. Miss would be alive, if she approved her pregnancy leave. Hayat goes to Amira’s home and faces backlashes from her mother.
After two weeks, the school authority starts to take classes at night until the new building is constructed. The fire incident demolished the reputation of the school. That’s why they have decided to not allow any student to go outside without a teacher. Hayat wants all the students’ violation records that Miss Sahem has on a flash memory.
The Investigation of Amira’s Death; From the Ashes 2024:
Miss Sahem finds Mona’s phone and some disturbing texts. She prints out them and all the girl’s files. Principal Hayat is sure that their investigation will uncover how Amira got locked in and who started the fire. Miss Sahem takes Heba, Mona and Mashael to Hayat. There is a text found in their chat which implies,
‘Please delete the picture, if they find out the punishment would be severe.’
It indicates something terrible they had done which they wanted to hide. But they show proof that the conversation was about bringing a candle on Mashael’s birthday party. Mona deleted the picture of the candle as it looked stupid. They already have a lot of violations, if they caught them the punishment would be severe.
Hayat interrogates them individually. Heba is the number one suspect who once wrote about Amira that she wants to erase Amira’s existence. Hayat is a strong willed woman who doesn’t stand men’s overpowering attitude. She doesn’t allow Rana’s father to see his daughter because he disregarded his daughter for six years not giving her proper expenses.
Next day the interrogation continues. Hayat reminds Mashael that one day they drew Amira mocking her, on the classroom board. Mashael spills that Heba did that. She has a kind heart and she doesn’t hold grudges, that she claims.
That day, Heba goes too far, she raises her voice with Miss Wedad because she told Miss Hayat about the message. Hayat shuts her up and tells Miss Sahem to file in all the details about her.
Who did lock Amira in? Who killed Amira ?
Meanwhile, Rana has a nightmare about Amira in her sleep. Waking up, Rana sees her grandma is receiving a parcel from uncle Saeed. Uncle Saeed has sent her the painting Amira was preparing to give for her birthday. Seeing this, Rana cries her heart out and confesses what she did to Amira.
She is the one who locked Amira in as she thought Miss Wedad would put Amira’s name on the honours board again. When she saw her going to the storeroom, she followed her and locked her in. At first grandma thinks she is hallucinating because of the pill. But it is actually true. She makes her promise not to tell anyone else.
Hayat tells Heba that Mona is the one who reported that she and Mashael were in the bathroom. Heba gets angry and flashes up the secret truth. Mashael has a boyfriend named Saad and Mash introduced Saad’s friend to Mona. They secretly met bunking classes. Amira knew that.
Hayat calls Mash and Mona and says what Heba said. They say on the day of fire, Heba did go to the bathroom but she didn’t go there straight away, she spent enough time to kill Amira. Hayat notes it down and submits it to the police. The police arrest Heba until it is proven that she is guilty.
The Twist; From The Ashes 2024:
When Rana confesses to her mother that she is the culprit, Hayat tells her she knew about it. But still she framed Heba to get arrested by the police. Mashael’s mom Marzuka told Hayat about Rana. When everyone was running downstairs Rana screamed saying Amira is in the store room.
Hayat threatens Marzuka saying if she flashes out any truth, she would kick out her, Mashael, and the doorman(Mashael’s father). So Marzuka lied to the policeman to avoid misery. Rana stands up and reprimands her mother for acting so selfish and cruel. She was never a failure. She was doing excellent in her studies but Hayat was never happy with her. Her insatiable expectation forced her to commit such a mistake.
Rana goes to the police and confesses her crime. Conversely the movie shows how the fire started that day. When Mashael and Mona were smoking, Miss Sahem caught them red handed. She grabbed the cigarette and took a puff when no one was around. But when she threw it, she didn’t notice that the cigarette was ignited. It touches the stubble and gets spread out. By the way, Miss Sahem is the new principal of this school now.
