What happened in 1992 in the movie May December?
The day Elizabeth Berry comes to Gracie’s place, Gracie and Joe arrange a party along with the neighbours. This is the ‘Joe’ whom she was caught being intimate with in that pet store. Joe was only a 13 years old child when this shit happened. This is why she was sent to jail where Gracie gave birth to her first child with seventh grade student Joe.
The entry of Elizabeth Berry in Gracie’s life:

When Elizabeth reaches there, she gets a box, kept in front of Gracie’s house. It is a box of real shit. People send these things to express their hatred for them. Elizabeth gets shocked and starts to look around the place. She secretly observes Gracie, it amazes her that she has no guilt, seen on her face. She is just pretty normal. Mary and Charlie are twins. The elder one is at college. Mary is pretty sweet, and meets with her. She never sees any television person for real.
A neighbour says she is unapologetic when she is talking about Gracie. It seems Gracie is pretty popular among her neighbourhood. Elizabeth starts visiting pretty often. Next day, she does a job that you can call organising a flower vase. Gracie nicely teaches Elizabeth how to embellish a vase orderly with flowers and leaves. She mentions her admiral brother during teaching. At the dinner table, Elizabeth throws many questions.
Gracie calls her childhood unique as she was pretty close to her brothers. But Elizabeth notices a subtle wrath when Gracie gets asked about her children by her ex-husband. Elizabeth reminds Joe about his early parenting. Elizabeth and Joe are the same age. She has just started to think about having kids but Joe is sending his kids off to college. Elizabeth is playing tricks to know about his regrets, pains but Joe avoids the question as if he gets a little scared.
Elizabeth meets the ex husband of Gracie, Tom to know how he survived the weirdness of the incident. Gracie awakens her not to interact with anyone without informing her so that she doesn’t have to account to neighbours. She meets the pet store owner and sees the stockroom and acts like she is Gracie, passing that intimate moment. Elizabeth checks on the 13 years old boy’s x-ray of hand and she expresses her joy to get the chance to sneak around with him.
She also meets the lawyer who handled Gracie’s case when she was in trouble for getting caught. He informs Gracie was in love with the boy she was caught with and this case placed him in the front page of the Time magazine. Here is an interesting fact that people order cakes just to keep her busy. It’s a kindness they show to her. Elizabeth is invited to Mary’s school where she answers questions.
Elizabeth says she prefers complex roles to know whether they are born like this or they are made. Mary pisses off with her knowing that. Returning home she takes a walk with Joe. Joe collects millipedes from gardens and jars them until they turn into butterflies. He confesses he is happy with her though everyone treats him as a victim. Elizabeth behaves with him very considerately.
When Joe returns home, he finds Gracie crying hard lying on the bed because someone has to cancel the cake order for leaving the town. It took hours to make it that depresses her. Next day their older child Honor comes home to join in Mary’s graduation day. Charlie smokes weed with his dad and Joe gets high as it’s his first time. Joe confesses he always wants to provide the best life for them but maybe he can’t. Charlie consoles her father with a tight hug.

He informs about Gracie’s childhood trauma. She got abused in her childhood by her brothers on and off.

Elizabeth understands he is not happy in this relationship so she calms him down saying you have chances to start a new life. Returning home he tells Gracie he was too young to make those decisions but she was grown up. How could she allow him to go wrong? Gracie who always wears a sympathetic and naive mask that actually she is not, says as Joe seduced her, it is his fault.
On graduation day, Gracie again meets Elizabeth and says that ‘brother thing’ wasn’t real. Elizabeth gets shocked and feels thrilled thinking she is gonna portray such a complicated character.
Memorable quotes and dialogues May December 2023:

‘People are just ordering things to keep her busy’
People think Gracie is so naive. She just fell in love and became entangled in criminal law. She is always good with her neighbours and it mesmerises neighbours. That’s why they order cakes from her just to keep her busy so that she can keep herself away from grief.
‘Keep your expectations low and you will never be disappointed’
Gracie said it to Elizabeth and it has a hidden meaning that we can understand watching the whole movie. Gracie knows Joe wants a free life and on the other hand he loves his children as he is sympathetic. She uses his emotion to keep him attached to her but doesn’t make him know that she knows his desire.
‘Insecure people are very dangerous. Aren’t they?…I am insecure.’
Gracie’s brother abused her in her childhood, that’s why she can’t trust older people. But now her present love is not happy with her either. So she always feels insecure. Georgie tells secrets to Elizabeth that pisses her off so she forcefully makes him confess it.
What was the incident Gracie got arrested for?

Gracie got caught having an affair with a seventh grader when she and Joe worked in a pet store in Savannah. She acted the whole time they both were involved in that affair but we will gradually know Joe was too young to make those decisions.
People want peace, people want love. No matter what she needs to cost, she is ready to fight. You can’t beat her.
