‘Mulholland Drive is a circling road with a scenic backdrop’
Exclusive Plot Analysis; Mulholland Drive 2001:
A brunette girl, looking very sophisticated, is going somewhere in a car. In the middle of the road, the driver, in a black suit, attempts to shoot her. At that moment, two cars approach at a high speed and collide into the car.
The two men in black suits die there, but the girl survives. She goes to the city by walking and manages to enter a house when the owner is about to leave. The aunt has evacuated the house for her coming niece who is an aspiring actress.
The police investigate the death spot and find a pearl earring which belongs to none of the dead present there. That means someone is missing. We meet another person in a restaurant who is describing his dream which he saw consecutively for two days. The person who is sitting in front of him watches him suffer out of panic.
We see Ray, the Godfather, appoints a girl for Adam’s movie. They arrange a meeting where they bring up a girl’s photo. Adam repeatedly says ‘No’ to the girl and they get flustered. Cynthia, Adam’s film crew inform him that Ray fired everyone on the set.
He has got to fix this talking with Ray. But Adam is going home. After going home, he finds his wife having sex with her boyfriend. He takes her jewellery to destroy them to hurt her and eventually gets thrown out.
Betty is thinking where she might go that night. Rita can remember the road, it was Mulholland drive. Betty suggests to her to inform the police to know if any accident took place there. They take them to a phone booth and call the Hollywood police.
She asks if there was an accident in Mulholland drive since she heard a sound and they let her know about the accident. Rita assumes her name might be Diane Selwyn seeing a nameplate of a waitress.
Two people come to Adam Kesher’s house in search of him. One of them reaches where he is hiding out and sends him a message conveying his credits in his bank has been cancelled.
Cynthia tells him to meet with a man named ‘The Cowboy’. He will be waiting for him at the top of Beachwood Canyon. After the meeting, the cowboy tells him to remove his attitude and to take the girl, shown earlier, in his movie.
That night, a drunk neighbour, Louise stops by and says Betty is in danger. She removes her off and plans to meet Diane Selwyn after her audition. Next day, after a fabulous audition, she goes to Diane’s house and finds her dead. Betty tells Rita to sleep with her and they are on good terms now. In opposition, Adam takes that forcely appointed girl even after her lousy performance.
In the middle of the night, Rita wakes up and utters some random phrases like ‘Silencio’. She takes Betta to a theatre at 2:00 am. They are displaying some illusional game. A girl sings a song named ‘Crying’ which makes them cry. Betty finds a blue box and they return to the house. When Rita comes with her key to open it, Betty disappears.

That blue box leads the scene to the house of Diane Selwyn. She and Camilla are actresses and they share an intimate relationship but Camilla doesn’t want this to continue anymore because she loves her director Adam. They kiss on the movie set and Diane watches it with a heavy heart.
One day Camilla takes her to a party where Diane says she was from Ontario and wanted to be an actress. Camilla helped her to get roles and they became friends on a movie set. After, Adam and Camilla announce their engagement.
Diane can’t take this anymore and hire a man to kill her. He gives her a key, whenever the murder is done, she will find that key in her house. When she finds that key, she understands she is dead. She takes the key fearfully, and suddenly a lot of people topple over her. She can’t bear it and shoots herself to death.
Ending Explained; Mulholland Drive 2001:
When Diane gave that sniper man Joe the order to kill Camilla, he couldn’t kill her. She survived the accident and stole the money and got a key. This key makes people hallucinate. But once you get the box, that will be over.
Rita or Camilla escapes to an empty house who is gonna stay over someplace far for days and no niece of hers was supposed to come that day. Camilla had a concussion and got amnesiac. She becomes Rita and starts to hallucinate people she knew from the past.
Like she was seeing Adam’s mom Coco as a caring neighbour, watching Diane as Betty because once Diane was jolly like that waitress. So she named her Betty. In real life, Camilla was selfish but now she was helping Betty to achieve her goal. But there is no existence of Betty.
When Betty went for her audition we can see Adam was looking at her. Adam actually wasn’t seeing Betty, he was thinking about Diane, whom he did terribly wrong with once. Now he is paying off by taking unworthy actresses into his film against his will. He made Diane suffer even though she was a better actress than Camilla.
