‘Over time, loneliness gets inside you and doesn’t go away.’
Plot Analysis of The Good Neighbour 2022:
David Stevenson waits for his taxi that will take him to his new apartment in Riga, Latvia. He will work here as a swing writer. In his office, he meets his new colleagues and his interest, Iris.
At night he tries to drive the car kept in the garage but there is no fuel. He borrows a fuel tank from his British neighbour, Robert. David notices fish on a table for cutting that Robert might have caught up from the river.
David opens up the car trunk to fix it but he needs Robert’s hand. They go for a ride and share each other’s story. David’s girlfriend went with his best friend as he wasn’t ready for marriage. Robert tells him to believe in himself and the universe will do the rest for him. David gets a good companionship in this lonely city.
Next day, David heads out, submitting the money laundering piece to his boss. He offers his boss to have lunch with him but he gets stuck with his phone interview from Boston. At night he feels so bored and offers a drink to Robert from the bar.
Love is dangerous! The Good Neighbour 2022:
David meets a sweet girl from London, Janine and builds a romantic connection with her. It’s pretty eye soothing watching them dancing together. But the audience can feel a pair of jealous eyes observing them from behind.
And that is Robert. He is not happy seeing them together.
Mrs Petrov tells about a noise she heard last night from down the lane. She just saw two silhouettes, nothing else. Suddenly a knock breaks their flow and Robert answers it. It is the officer who wants to interrogate Petrov but Robert refrains him, telling him a lie. The officer delivers a card so that she can call him anytime if remembers anything.
David’s precarious life in fear in The Good Neighbour 2022:
Going to the office, David notices the boss is studying the murder case with his colleagues because they have to make news within a while. He joins them but a slight layer of fright keeps masking his face. The writing liability stands upon David.
Detective Juta Reine says in a press conference, a taxi driver has found the dead body on the river road. Janina Rafaela was riding her bicycle home from the bar Territorija. Meanwhile, we see Robert pushing the BMW car into the river to destroy evidence. It seems he is trying to save David.
Detective continues saying she was hit by a car, the driver left the scene of the accident. David can’t hold it anymore, he vomits out of stress. Janine’s sister comes forward to push the journalists to write about so that the witnesses are brought to light.
David doesn’t see his car in the garage and knows it is gone for good. David wants to surrender but Robert reminds him it is scary going to prison here in Latvia for a murder. If he were him, he would never want that. He suggests to him to wait for tomorrow and report it stolen.
How does Robert make up the story about that day?
Robert tells him to write a different story to avoid jail. They went to a bar, had a few drinks, left the bar at 12:15, and took a tram at 12:30. They have to protect each other. It convinces David.
David goes fishing with Robert and cooks fish for dinner. He finds several toy statues in a sandy space. But Robert prohibits him from touching them as they were left by his mom who went away. David asks more about his mother but Robert suddenly changes topic.
Next day, Venessa meets David after work. She knows how to catch the killer. She shows a roadmap which indicates the highway is the fastest route from the club. The accident happened on the river road. What if the killer deliberately avoided the highway.
David thinks there can be many reasons for a person to avoid the highway, we can’t decide anything on the basis of this assumption. Venessa pleads holding his hand, David inspirits her telling he will do the best.
Roberts different behaviour in The Good Neighbour 2022:
David and Robert go out for fishing and the fishing nail pinches David’s finger. Robert tries to suck out the infection from his finger and it irritates David. Robert gets ashamed of his behaviour and apologises.
On the way to home, Robert apologises again. David is upset because he killed a woman. Bad things happen to good people and he needs to get over it, he says. But David doesn’t feel that way. He doesn’t want him anymore to be involved in his matters.
David gets to know from his boss that Robert is an odd bird as his mother used to leave him alone for weeks and weeks. He asks David if everything is alright and asks for his car as he is to leave for a festival. David makes up a story that he was having trouble running the car. At night David notices Robert is keeping his eyes on him from the window.
Next day, he buys a grill for Robert, invites him for dinner and his eyes shine over immense happiness. At the cafeteria, David calls Venessa aiming to know how she is coping. She wises up, an old lady agreed on eye witnessing. David delivers it to Robert out of panic.
David meets Venessa to know more about it. Conversely, Robert tells Petrov she needs a magnesium injection in order to fill her lack in blood that shows in the blood report. Actually Robert lies to her to wipe out the thorn and Petrov gets a heart attack because of it Venessa cries out, losing her only hope.
Robert arranges all the nice food for their dinner party but David cuts him off from it to meet the deadline of the news report. Robert inspires him for work but inside, he gets hopeless. He takes his dinner to his office and gets to know David is not there, and has gone out main street to have some sushi for dinner. Robert goes there and finds him chattering with Venessa.
The conflict rises; The Good Neighbour 2022:
Robert keeps his eyes on Venessa when she is on the way home. Audience might expect a violence but he spares her seemingly. Next day Venessa shares about the huge fight that took place in Greece. She feels guilty of her conduct now. She cries out her pain and at some time falls asleep.
Robert spies on him through the windows. Next day, after returning from Janine’s Memorial, he faces interrogation from Robert and gets asked about his new companion Venessa whom he is not happy about at all. David doesn’t approve of the matter of spying. Robert denies it and tells him about her Uber which causes him to wake up at night.
Women always find out everything eventually. Robert admonishes him, throwing a newspaper to him. David missed a couple of deadlines recently, Henry wises up to the boss. Boss gets a call about getting his stolen car, the BMW which Robert drowned in the water. He wonders how his car has been stolen.
Boss checks her rented place and finds no car. At that time Robert says hi to him. We can assume something terrible is gonna happen. David is gonna break up with Venessa but eventually ends up having more passionately tangled with her. Robert can’t take it after all the things he did for him.
Venessa takes David to kayaking. David is breathing fresh, seeing Venessa happy. But there is Robert, who won’t let him be happy without him. He intrigues Venessa telling her about Janine’s dead body. Venessa almost drowns being upside down into the water but David doesn’t let her die. They return home.
David tells Robert to stay away from him, he has got everything under control. Detective meets David and confronts him with the truth. The night Janine was killed, he called her and he was in the same bar with her. David startles and covers him up with the lie Robert asked him to tell. He called her but didn’t realise it was the same girl. Then he took the tram on the way home.

Venessa gets shocked and breaks up with him right away. Robert forces David to leave her for good. Venessa is about to leave waiting for the tram but the worker says the tram service is shut for a month. Venessa goes to David to know the truth about her sister. But she meets Robert instead. Guess what? He hostages her.
Robert offers David a vacation trip outside this city but David throws the tickets to his face angrily. Robert feels devastated and leaves right away. David is ready to tell the truth but can’t find Venessa. Robert calls David and tells him the location where Venessa is tied.
Robert slams Venessa’s head with a wood and he thinks she is killed. David reaches there when it’s too late. David is about to hit Robert, meanwhile the cop finds them. Robert acts innocent seeing the cop and they arrest David for all the allegations against him.
Plot Twist in The Good Neighbour 2022:
Robert was a lonely man from his childhood. His mother used to leave him alone for months. He grew up alone. His mom eventually left him. He was alone and always wanted a brother. His soul wanted a person to be solely loyal to him.
But the world doesn’t work that way. The more you would want to keep, the less the possibility to keep. You have to be open for everyone and let others live their life in their own way. Robert functions everything differently.
The night Janine got hit by the car, she lost consciousness but Robert tells David she is dead. That one lie destroys a lot of life eventually. He kills Janine, Boss and Petrov.
And yes, Venessa got her pulse back at the end. Since he shared every truth before the hit, he gets scared and frustrated. Eventually he commits suicide jumping into the water.
